Sealing: Travertine is a porous stone and must be sealed before grouting and use. Apply a penetrating stone sealer to all split-face surfaces prior to installation, and reseal every 12 months in wet areas such as showers or outdoor walls. The open pits and cleft texture of split-face travertine are especially absorbent, so thorough sealer penetration is critical — a second coat is recommended.

Cleaning: Clean with a pH-neutral stone cleaner only — never use acidic cleaners (vinegar, citrus), bleach, or abrasive scrubs, as these will etch and erode the calcium-based travertine surface. For the split-face texture, use a soft brush rather than a flat cloth to work cleaner into the crevices, and rinse thoroughly with clean water.

Installation: Use a white polymer-modified thinset mortar to prevent dark adhesive from showing through the porous, pitted stone chips. Back-butter each sheet in addition to applying thinset to the substrate for full coverage behind the irregular split surface. Use unsanded grout for joints under 1/8 inch or sanded grout for wider joints; ensure grout is pressed fully into the open pits and voids at chip edges. Align mesh sheets carefully — the three-dimensional relief makes re-positioning difficult once set.

Important: Inspect all tile before installation. Variations in color, veining, and texture between pieces are natural characteristics of genuine stone — not defects. Order roughly 10% extra to allow for cuts, waste, and future repairs.

Sealing & Care
Natural stone should be sealed with a quality penetrating sealer before and after installation, and re-sealed periodically in wet or high-traffic areas. Clean only with a pH-neutral stone cleaner; avoid acidic products, bleach, vinegar, and ammonia, which can permanently etch the surface. Outdoor installations may weather or change tone over time with exposure.
