Natural Stone Tile Shade Variation Explained: V1, V2, V3 & V4
Natural stone isn’t printed — it’s quarried. Every tile is a slice of rock that formed over millions of years, so no two pieces are identical. That natural movement is the whole point of real stone, but it surprises buyers who expect the uniformity of porcelain. The industry measures this with a simple scale called shade variation, rated V1 through V4. Understanding it before you buy is the single best way to love your finished floor or wall — and to avoid ordering mistakes.
What “shade variation” actually means
Shade variation describes how much color, veining, and tone differ from one tile to the next within the same product. The veins and color shifts you see are mineral deposits — iron oxides and other trace elements that settled along natural fractures in the stone. A low-variation stone looks consistent tile to tile; a high-variation stone can look dramatically different across a single box. Neither is “better.” It’s about knowing what you’re getting so the result matches your vision.
The V1–V4 shade variation scale
Here’s the standard scale, with a real example from our collection at each level so you can see the difference rather than just read about it.
V1 — Uniform Appearance
Minimal difference between tiles. Clean, predictable, and easy to lay out. Example: Thassos White marble — a pure, crystalline white with virtually no veining. What you see in one tile is what you’ll see across the lot.
V2 — Slight Variation
Consistent base color with gentle differences in veining and tone. Example: White Carrara marble — a soft white-gray field with delicate veining that shifts subtly between pieces.
V3 — Moderate to High Variation
Significant differences in veining direction, intensity, and color from tile to tile. Example: Calacatta Viola marble — a bright white background cut through with bold burgundy, violet, and gold. Each tile is its own statement.
V4 — Substantial Variation
Dramatic, random differences — expect strong color and pattern movement across the whole order. Example: Gold & Noce travertine — warm, earthy tones with bold movement that reads as rich texture across a full floor.
Why lots differ — and why it matters
Stone is quarried in batches called lots. Because each lot comes from a different section of the quarry, color and veining can shift between lots even for the same product. That’s why ordering matters:
How to order so your tiles blend beautifully
- Order everything in one purchase. Buying your full quantity from a single lot keeps color consistent across the whole project.
- Add ~10% overage. Covers cuts, waste, and future repairs — and patterns like herringbone need even more.
- Order a sample first. See the current lot’s tone under your own lighting before committing. Samples ship free.
- Dry-lay before you set. Lay tiles out loose first to arrange the veining the way you want it.
- Blend from multiple boxes. Pull tiles from several boxes as you work for the most natural, balanced look — especially on V3 and V4 stone.
Frequently asked questions
Is shade variation a defect?
No. Variation in color, veining, and tone is a natural characteristic of genuine stone, not a flaw. It’s the signature that tells you the material is real, not a printed imitation.
Which shade variation should I choose?
It depends on the look you want. Choose V1–V2 for a calm, uniform, contemporary surface. Choose V3–V4 when you want the stone to be a bold focal point with rich movement and character.
Will my tiles look exactly like the website photo?
Photos and samples are representative, but because every lot differs, your material may not match a single image exactly — particularly on V3 and V4 stones. Order a sample to confirm the current lot, and ask our team for current lot photos.
What happens if I run out and reorder later?
A later order may come from a different lot with a slightly different tone and veining. To avoid mismatches, order your full quantity plus overage at the same time.
How much extra tile should I order?
About 10% over your measured area for straight layouts, and more for diagonal or patterned installations. See our tile calculator to estimate your project.
