Marble Tile FAQ
What's the difference between polished and honed marble?
Polished marble has a glossy finish that brings out the veining; it's ideal for walls, backsplashes and low-traffic floors. Honed marble has a smooth matte finish that's less slippery when wet and hides wear better, so it's the usual choice for bathroom and kitchen floors.
Is marble tile good for flooring?
Marble flooring is a timeless, long-lasting choice for bathrooms, entries and living areas. Choose honed or tumbled marble floor tile for better grip underfoot, and clean with a pH-neutral stone cleaner.
Can I use marble tile in a shower or bathroom?
Yes. Marble is a classic choice for shower walls and bathroom floors. Choose honed or tumbled for floors, and seal the tile to protect it from water and soap.
Does marble tile need to be sealed?
Yes. All marble should be sealed with a penetrating stone sealer. In wet areas like showers, reseal about every 12 months. Clean with a pH-neutral cleaner and avoid vinegar or lemon-based products.
What's the difference between Carrara and Calacatta marble?
Carrara has a soft white-gray background with fine, feathery gray veining. Calacatta has a brighter white background with bolder, more dramatic veining and is rarer. Calacatta Viola has striking burgundy and violet veining.
Will my tile look exactly like the photos?
Marble is a natural stone, so every piece varies in veining and tone. Each product lists its variation rating, and we recommend ordering a sample to see the real stone. See our Shade & Color Variation guide.
How thick is your marble tile?
Most marble field tile is 3/8" or 1/2" thick, depending on the shipment. Mosaics are 3/8". Thickness is listed on each product page.
How much extra should I order?
Add about 10% for cuts and waste, and 15% for herringbone or other patterns. Order your full quantity at once so the whole job comes from one lot.
Can I see a sample first?
Yes. Samples are $7.99 each and ship free, so you can see the color and veining in your own space before you order.
