About the 2×4 Split-Face Philadelphia Travertine Brick Mosaic

Material Education

Philadelphia Travertine is a warm, earth-toned natural stone quarried from ancient sedimentary deposits, celebrated for its rich palette of walnut browns, russet ambers, and creamy ivories. The stone's characteristic pitted surface and flowing linear voids reveal millions of years of mineral-rich water activity, giving each piece a deeply organic, textural personality. A subtle crystalline matrix catches light across the surface, adding quiet depth to the stone's natural warmth.

As a genuine natural stone, Philadelphia Travertine will exhibit variation in tone, vein pattern, and surface pitting from tile to tile — these are the hallmarks of authentic travertine and contribute to the handcrafted, layered aesthetic that makes each installation one of a kind.

About this mosaic: Small 2×4 brick-format chips are split-faced along the exposed plane and pre-arranged in a running-bond brick pattern on a mesh-backed sheet, allowing for fast, accurate installation while delivering dramatic three-dimensional relief that no pressed or ceramic product can replicate.

Design & Inspiration

The deep walnut, amber, and ivory tones of Philadelphia Travertine pair beautifully with oil-rubbed bronze or matte black fixtures, reclaimed white oak shelving, and warm-toned grout, making it an ideal choice for Mediterranean, rustic, industrial, or earthy modern interiors. Its natural color range bridges warm neutrals effortlessly, coordinating with both dark moody cabinetry and light sandy palettes.

The split-face finish creates bold shadow lines and tactile depth that transform accent walls, fireplace surrounds, and exterior facades into dramatic focal points with a hand-hewn, artisanal character. The compact 2×4 brick format keeps the texture refined and grid-like rather than overwhelming, making it suitable for both large feature walls and smaller niche applications.

Popular design combinations: pair this mosaic on a living room fireplace surround with wide-plank walnut flooring, matte black steel hardware, and a warm ivory plaster ceiling for a sophisticated organic-modern statement. Philadelphia Travertine is a warm-toned natural sedimentary stone renowned for its rich blend of walnut browns, russet ambers, and creamy ivory hues, sourced from ancient travertine deposits with a timeless geological character that has made travertine one of the most beloved building stones in history.

Each chip in this mosaic is split along its face to expose a raw, naturally fractured surface, creating dramatic three-dimensional texture and deep shadow lines; the mesh-backed sheet format organizes the chips in a classic running-bond brick pattern, making alignment straightforward and installation significantly faster than setting individual pieces.

This mosaic is ideally suited for interior accent walls, fireplace surrounds, spa shower feature walls, and exterior-facing garden or entry walls — because this is a clearance item, quantities are limited, so ordering a sample to verify color match and a full quantity check before committing to your project is strongly recommended.

Free Shipping: As a mosaic, this product qualifies for free curbside shipping on orders over $1,999 within the continental U.S. Orders below that threshold ship at standard rates calculated at checkout.

Processing & Delivery: Orders are processed within 2–3 business days. Large orders ship via LTL freight — curbside delivery only. An adult must be present to sign for delivery. Estimated transit: 2–10 business days after shipment.

30-Day Returns: Uninstalled tile may be returned within 30 days of delivery. Inspect all tile carefully before installation — installed tile cannot be returned or exchanged. Samples are final sale.

Exclusions: Free shipping does not apply to Hawaii, Alaska, U.S. territories, or international addresses. Additional charges may apply for remote delivery areas.

Sealing: Philadelphia Travertine is a porous sedimentary stone and must be sealed before grouting and after installation. Apply a penetrating impregnating sealer rated for travertine; in wet areas such as showers or exterior walls exposed to rain, reseal every 12–18 months. The split-face surface has significantly more exposed area and micro-crevices than a honed or polished tile, so thorough sealer saturation is especially important — apply two coats for best protection.

Cleaning: Clean with a pH-neutral stone cleaner diluted in warm water and a soft-bristle brush to work into the textured surface. Never use acidic cleaners (vinegar, citrus, or grout haze removers containing acid), alkaline degreasers, or pressure washers, as these will etch the stone surface and degrade the sealer. For routine maintenance, rinse the surface with clean water and allow to dry fully to prevent mineral deposits from pooling in surface voids.

Installation: Use a white or buff polymer-modified thinset mortar to avoid dark adhesive telegraphing through the natural voids in the stone. Back-butter individual chips or the back of each sheet in addition to the substrate for full coverage, as the irregular split-face surface can leave voids beneath chips if thinset is applied to the wall alone. Use unsanded or medium-bed grout depending on joint width; press grout firmly into all gaps and clean haze promptly with a damp sponge before it cures in the textured surface. Align sheets carefully during installation to maintain consistent joint lines across the running-bond pattern.

Important: Inspect all tile before installation. Variations in color, veining, and texture between pieces are natural characteristics of genuine stone — not defects. Order 10% overage for cuts, waste, and future repairs. Tile & Mosaic Depot specialists are available M–F 8:30AM–5PM PST at 855-797-8453.

Why Order a Sample
A screen can't show you how Calacatta veining reads under your kitchen lights or how a porcelain finish sits next to your cabinet color. A sample can. It's the single best way to buy stone or porcelain tile with confidence — and the cheapest mistake you'll ever avoid.

How It Works
Samples are $7.99 each. Samples ship free and leave our warehouse within 1–3 business days. Sizes vary by material and availability — typically 3"×3" up to 8"×8" — and every sample is cut from the same material stocked for full orders.

What a Sample Shows
Color, texture, finish, and overall character. Because natural stone varies piece to piece, one sample represents the material but can't show the full range of a lot. Porcelain samples are highly representative of the production run. Want to see the current lot before you commit? Ask us — we'll send photos.

Good to Know

  • Samples are final sale — non-returnable and non-refundable.
  • We recommend sampling before every full order, especially for natural stone.
  • Larger or custom quantity? Contact us for a tailored quote.

Talk to a Specialist
Our stone and tile specialists will help you narrow it down. Call (855) 797-8453 or email sales@tileandmosaicdepot.com, Monday–Friday, 8:30 AM–5 PM PT.

How Your Order Ships
In-stock orders leave our warehouse within 2–3 business days. Stone, porcelain, and mosaic ship on a pallet via scheduled LTL freight and arrive 2–10 business days after dispatch, depending on destination. You'll get tracking and the carrier's name by email the day it ships.

Freight Delivery — What to Expect

  • The carrier calls you first. Every freight delivery is by appointment. Expect a call or text to set a window before the truck is dispatched.
  • Curbside delivery. The driver unloads to the curb or driveway. Freight does not include carrying material indoors or into a garage — plan for a helper or a hand truck.
  • Someone 18+ must sign. Inspect the pallet before signing. Note any damage, shortage, or broken shrink-wrap on the delivery receipt — this is what makes a claim valid.
  • Truck access. The address must be accessible to a full-size freight truck with enough space to unload.

Free Shipping
Free curbside freight on qualifying mosaic and molding orders over $1,999 in the continental U.S. Field tile, porcelain, and other product types ship at freight rates shown at checkout. Not available to Hawaii, Alaska, U.S. territories, or international addresses.

Damage & Shortages
Report within 3 calendar days of delivery with photos of the pallet, packaging, and affected pieces to sales@tileandmosaicdepot.com. Verified claims are covered. Shortages of 1–5 pieces are refunded rather than reshipped — which is why we recommend ordering 10% overage.

30-Day Returns
Uninstalled tile in full, unopened boxes may be returned within 30 days of delivery. Return freight is paid by the customer. Partial boxes, opened boxes, installed material, and samples are final sale.

Questions Before You Order?
Call (855) 797-8453 or email sales@tileandmosaicdepot.com, Monday–Friday 8:30 AM–5 PM PT. If you're unsure about freight access at your address, ask us before checkout — we'll flag anything that could hold up delivery.

Natural Variation
Quarried stone varies in color, veining, shade, movement, and finish from piece to piece and from lot to lot. Screen photos and samples show the range, not the exact tile you'll receive. Variation is the nature of the material and is never grounds for return. Porcelain is far more consistent, but shade and pattern can still shift between production runs — buy your full quantity in one order.

Before You Install

  • Order 10% overage. Covers cuts, breakage, and spares for future repairs. Reorders may not match in tone or lot.
  • Inspect every piece before setting. Pull from all boxes, blend, and dry-lay the full area. Installation is acceptance — no claims are honored once tile is set.
  • Hire a qualified installer. Natural stone and large-format porcelain require experience with the material. Your installer is responsible for substrate, setting materials, and method.

Sealing & Care
Natural stone should be sealed with a penetrating sealer and re-sealed periodically in wet and high-traffic areas. Clean with a pH-neutral stone cleaner only — vinegar, bleach, ammonia, and acidic cleaners etch marble, limestone, travertine, and onyx permanently. Porcelain does not require sealing. Outdoor stone weathers and shifts in tone over time; this is expected.

Responsibility
Tile & Mosaic Depot supplies material only. We are not responsible for installation, labor costs, substrate conditions, setting materials, product misuse, or damage from handling, sealing, maintenance, or chemicals. No claims, returns, or replacements are accepted on installed material.

California Proposition 65
