Basalt Black is a fine-grained volcanic stone celebrated for its deep, uniform charcoal-black color and exceptional density. Sourced from volcanic regions across Asia, this igneous stone is harder and denser than most sedimentary tiles, making it one of the most durable natural stone options available for both residential and commercial projects.

The flamed finish is achieved by exposing the stone's surface to intense heat, causing the minerals to burst and crystallize into a naturally rough, slip-resistant texture with a consistent matte appearance. The 16×24 format lays in a clean straight-set or offset bond pattern with minimal grout lines, creating a bold, architectural aesthetic that reads as both raw and refined.

Sealing: Although basalt is denser than marble or limestone, its flamed surface has an open, porous texture that must be sealed before installation. Apply a penetrating impregnating sealer prior to grouting and re-seal annually in outdoor or high-traffic applications, and every 1–2 years in interior settings. For pool surrounds, use a sealer rated for wet/submerged environments.

Cleaning: Clean with a pH-neutral stone cleaner and a stiff nylon brush to remove debris from the textured surface. Avoid acidic cleaners (vinegar, citrus-based products), bleach, or alkaline degreasers, which can dull the stone or compromise the sealer over time. For outdoor use, periodic pressure washing at low PSI is acceptable once the stone is properly sealed.

Installation: Use a polymer-modified gray or charcoal thinset to complement the dark stone color and prevent any white bleed-through at the joints. For the 16×24 format, back-butter each tile in addition to combing the substrate with a 1/2-inch notched trowel to achieve full coverage and prevent lippage. Maintain a minimum 3/16-inch grout joint and use sanded grout matched to the stone's dark tone. Ensure the substrate is level and structurally sound, especially for exterior installations subject to thermal movement.

Important: Inspect all tile before installation. Variations in color, veining, and texture between pieces are natural characteristics of genuine stone — not defects. A screen can't show you how Calacatta veining reads under your kitchen lights or how a porcelain finish sits next to your cabinet color. A sample can. It's the single best way to buy stone or porcelain tile with confidence — and the cheapest mistake you'll ever avoid.

How It Works
Samples are $7.99 each. Samples ship free and leave our warehouse within 1–3 business days. Sizes vary by material and availability — typically 3"×3" up to 8"×8" — and every sample is cut from the same material stocked for full orders.

What a Sample Shows
Color, texture, finish, and overall character. Because natural stone varies piece to piece, one sample represents the material but can't show the full range of a lot. Porcelain samples are highly representative of the production run. Want to see the current lot before you commit? Ask us — we'll send photos.

How Your Order Ships
In-stock orders leave our warehouse within 2–3 business days. Stone, porcelain, and mosaic ship on a pallet via scheduled LTL freight and arrive 2–10 business days after dispatch, depending on destination. You'll get tracking and the carrier's name by email the day it ships.

Freight Delivery — What to Expect

  • The carrier calls you first. Every freight delivery is by appointment. Expect a call or text to set a window before the truck is dispatched.
  • Curbside delivery. The driver unloads to the curb or driveway. Freight does not include carrying material indoors or into a garage — plan for a helper or a hand truck.
  • Someone 18+ must sign. Inspect the pallet before signing. Note any damage, shortage, or broken shrink-wrap on the delivery receipt — this is what makes a claim valid.
  • Truck access. The address must be accessible to a full-size freight truck with enough space to unload.

Uninstalled tile in full, unopened boxes may be returned within 30 days of delivery. Return freight is paid by the customer. Partial boxes, opened boxes, installed material, and samples are final sale.

Natural Variation
Quarried stone varies in color, veining, shade, movement, and finish from piece to piece and from lot to lot. Screen photos and samples show the range, not the exact tile you'll receive. Variation is the nature of the material and is never grounds for return. Porcelain is far more consistent, but shade and pattern can still shift between production runs — buy your full quantity in one order.

Before You Install

  • Order 10% overage. Covers cuts, breakage, and spares for future repairs. Reorders may not match in tone or lot.
  • Inspect every piece before setting. Pull from all boxes, blend, and dry-lay the full area. Installation is acceptance — no claims are honored once tile is set.
  • Hire a qualified installer. Natural stone and large-format porcelain require experience with the material. Your installer is responsible for substrate, setting materials, and method.

Sealing & Care
Natural stone should be sealed with a penetrating sealer and re-sealed periodically in wet and high-traffic areas. Clean with a pH-neutral stone cleaner only — vinegar, bleach, ammonia, and acidic cleaners etch marble, limestone, travertine, and onyx permanently. Porcelain does not require sealing. Outdoor stone weathers and shifts in tone over time; this is expected.
