Travertine Paver Thickness: What 3 cm Pavers Can and Cannot Do

Travertine pavers for residential work are most commonly 3 cm thick, which is about 1 3/16 inches and often rounded to 1 1/4. Every natural stone paver we stock is 3 cm. That thickness is what lets a paver be dry-laid on a compacted base for foot traffic, something thin travertine tile cannot do. It does not make a pavement ready for cars. That depends on what is underneath.

Tile, paver and coping: three thicknesses, three jobs

Product Thickness How it is installed Where it belongs
Travertine tile Thinner than a paver; confirm per product Bonded with mortar to concrete or an interior substrate Interior floors and walls; exterior only on a slab
Travertine paver 3 cm, about 1 3/16 in. Dry-laid on a compacted base, or mortar-set on concrete Patios, walkways, pool decks
Pool coping 3 cm or 5 cm Mortar-set on the pool's bond beam Pool edges, steps, wall caps
Ivory travertine 16x24 tumbled paver, 3 cm thick

The practical rule: tile needs continuous support from mortar, and a paver is thick enough to bridge a bedding layer. If the stone will sit on sand, it has to be a paver.

If the stone will sit on sand, it has to be a paver.

What 3 cm handles well

A 3 cm tumbled paver suits the three jobs most people buy it for.

  • Patios and walkways. Foot traffic and furniture, dry-laid or mortar-set.
  • Pool decks. A tumbled surface has texture underfoot, and the same stones are cut as coping so the deck and the pool edge match.
  • Overlays on existing concrete. A sound, well-drained slab can be covered with mortar-set pavers.

Our travertine pavers come in Ivory, Noce, Scabos, Silver and Walnut, in sizes from 6x6 to 24x24 and in French pattern sets. Myra limestone is cut to the same 3 cm.

03

Sand-set or mortar-set

There are two ways to install a stone paver, and the choice matters more than the thickness.

Dry-laid (sand-set) Mortar-set
What is underneath Compacted aggregate base, then about 1 in. of bedding sand A concrete slab, then exterior-rated mortar
Joints Tight, filled with jointing sand Grouted or mortared
Strengths Drains through the joints; individual pavers can be lifted and reset Rigid and flat; the slab carries the load
Watch for Needs edge restraint; settles if the base is thin or poorly compacted Needs movement joints and slope; cracks in the slab can show through
Best for Patios, paths and pool decks on stable, well-drained ground Driveways, overlays, steps and coping

Base depth for dry-laid work

No stone-specific standard that we could find sets these numbers. The closest published guidance comes from the Concrete Masonry and Hardscapes Association, written for concrete pavers 2 3/8 inches thick: a minimum of 4 inches of compacted aggregate base for pedestrian areas and at least 6 inches for residential driveways on well-drained soil, under a nominal 1 inch of bedding sand. Treat those figures as a starting point for stone, not a specification. Weak soil, poor drainage and deep frost all call for more.

Mortar-set work

For bonded exterior tile installations, the Tile Council of North America calls for better than 95% mortar contact, movement joints and a surface sloped to drain, and stone needs the same. Voids under a paver hold water, and trapped water is what damages exterior stonework.

Can you drive on 3 cm travertine pavers?

Several of our 3 cm pavers, such as the Ivory travertine 16x24 paver, are listed for driveway use. Treat that as a statement about the stone, not about the whole pavement. Two cautions apply.

First, we could not find a published standard that sets a minimum thickness for stone pavers under vehicles. Second, the nearest guidance, again from the concrete paver industry, does not recommend thin units of 1 1/4 to 1 3/4 inches for any vehicular application, whether sand-set or adhered to concrete, and says units whose length is four or more times their thickness should not be used under vehicles. A 16x24 paver at 3 cm is about twenty times as long as it is thick, and even a 6x6 is about five times.

Read strictly, that guidance rules out 3 cm units under vehicles. It was written for concrete pavers, not stone, so it does not settle the question, but it is a reason for caution. If you want travertine on a driveway, treat the points below as a minimum:

  • Mortar-set the pavers on a reinforced concrete slab designed for the vehicles that will use it. The slab carries the load, and the stone is the wearing surface.
  • Choose small formats. A 6x6, 6x12 or 8x8 spans less and is less likely to crack over an imperfection than a 24x24.
  • Insist on full mortar coverage. A hollow spot under a paver is where a tire finds it.
  • Have the contractor or an engineer specify the slab. Thickness, reinforcement and joints are structural decisions.
We do not recommend a dry-laid driveway in 3 cm stone. Talk to us and to your contractor before you order for any surface that will carry vehicles.

Size, format and the base

Larger pavers mean fewer joints and a calmer surface. They also demand a flatter base, because a 24x24 rocks on a high spot that a 6x12 would follow. Small formats, such as the Ivory travertine 6x12 paver, suit curves, slopes and tight spaces. Large formats suit broad, level terraces. French pattern sets mix four sizes and hide small irregularities well.

06

Climate, sealing and heat

Freeze-thaw

Be cautious with any travertine or limestone where the ground freezes. The Natural Stone Institute notes that the number of limestone varieties, travertine included, with a successful history in exterior paving is relatively limited, particularly in freeze-thaw environments. ASTM's dimension stone committee has not yet adopted a freeze-thaw test method for stone; one is in development. What you can control is drainage: a base that sheds water protects the stone above it. Avoid de-icing salts on travertine, limestone and marble.

Sealing

We recommend sealing exterior travertine with a penetrating sealer rated for outdoor use. An impregnating sealer repels water and stains. It does not make stone stain-proof and it does not prevent etching. Our guide to sealing natural stone tile covers how to test whether a surface needs it.

Heat

Lighter stone reflects more sunlight than darker stone. A 2024 study of 30 carbonate stones, travertine and limestone among them, found that the solar reflectance index rises with the lightness of the stone. Expect an ivory paver to run cooler than a walnut one in the same sun, and set a sample outside at midday before you decide.

Before you order

Ordering checklist

  • Area plus overage. Square footage plus 10%, and more for curves, diagonals and steps.
  • Minimum order. Our 3 cm pavers carry a 100 square foot minimum at the time of writing.
  • One lot. Order everything at once, including the pool coping if there is a pool, so the color range matches.
  • Freight. Pavers ship on pallets by freight carrier to the curb. Inspect the pallets and note any damage on the delivery receipt before you sign. Our shipping and returns page explains the process.
  • An alternative for hard winters. If freeze-thaw is the main concern, compare 2 cm porcelain pavers.
Common questions

Travertine paver FAQ

How thick are travertine pavers?

Most are 3 cm, about 1 3/16 inches. Pool coping is cut in 3 cm and 5 cm. Travertine tile is thinner and is a different product.

Can travertine pavers be laid on sand?

Yes, for foot traffic. A 3 cm paver can be dry-laid on a compacted aggregate base with a bedding layer of sand, tight joints and an edge restraint. Check the product page, since some give mortar-set instructions only.

Can I use travertine tile outside instead of pavers?

Only when it is bonded to a concrete slab with exterior-rated mortar and full coverage. Tile is too thin to dry-lay on sand.

Can 3 cm travertine pavers take a car?

Some of our 3 cm pavers are listed for driveways, but the closest published guidance, written for concrete pavers, does not recommend units this thin under vehicles. If you go ahead, bond small-format pavers to a reinforced concrete slab engineered for the load and have your contractor or an engineer approve the design. We do not recommend a sand-set driveway in 3 cm stone.

Do travertine pavers need to be sealed?

We recommend it outdoors. Sealer reduces water absorption and staining. It needs renewing, and how often depends on the sealer, the stone and the exposure.

Do travertine pavers stay cool in the sun?

Light colors reflect more sunlight than dark ones, so ivory travertine will generally be more comfortable than a dark surface. No paver is cool in direct summer sun, so test a sample in your own yard.
