TRAVERTINE VS PORCELAIN PAVERS: THE POOL DECK & PATIO BUYING GUIDE
The pavers you choose set the tone for your whole backyard: how the pool deck feels under bare feet, how it looks in afternoon light and how much care it needs each season. This guide compares travertine, limestone and porcelain pavers, explains sizes, thickness and finishes, and shows you how to match pool coping and order the right amount.
THE SHORT ANSWER
Travertine pavers are the classic pool deck choice: natural stone that stays comfortable underfoot, with a soft, textured surface and warm colors. Porcelain pavers give you a stone or concrete look with zero sealing and excellent frost resistance. Limestone pavers such as Myra (White Pearl) offer a bright, clean, coastal look. All three pair beautifully with matching pool coping.
YOUR MAIN PAVER OPTIONS
TRAVERTINE PAVERS
Travertine is a natural stone with a porous, textured structure that gives it a relaxed, timeless look. Ivory travertine is the most popular color for pool decks, followed by Silver, Noce and Walnut. Tumbled travertine has softened edges and a gently worn surface that feels natural and grips well when wet.
LIMESTONE PAVERS
Limestone offers a smoother, more uniform look than travertine. White Pearl (Myra) limestone is a favorite for modern and coastal designs, with a bright, creamy tone that keeps the deck feeling light and open.
PORCELAIN PAVERS
Porcelain pavers are 2 cm (about ¾") thick outdoor tiles made to handle weather, pool water and foot traffic with almost no upkeep. They come in stone-look, concrete-look and marble-look designs, usually in 24x24 and other large formats for a clean, modern deck.
MARBLE PAVERS
For a distinctive look, marble pavers in a Versailles pattern create a classic European courtyard feel in blue and gray tones.

SIZES AND PATTERNS
Travertine pavers come in many sizes, so you can match the scale of your space:
- 6x12 and 8x8: small formats for walkways, borders and cozy patios.
- 12x12 and 16x16: versatile, classic sizes for pool decks of any size.
- 16x24 and 24x24: larger formats with fewer joints for a calm, open look.
- Pattern sets (French / Versailles and Roman): multiple sizes laid in a repeating pattern for an old-world feel. Pattern pavers are sold by the square foot.
Porcelain pavers mostly come in 24x24, plus larger formats such as 24x36 and 18x36 in select designs, for a sleek, modern deck.
THICKNESS: 2 CM VS 3 CM
Natural stone pavers are typically 3 cm thick, while porcelain pavers are 2 cm. Both are made for outdoor use. Your installer will confirm which thickness suits your base and setting method, so share your site details with them before you order.
FINISHES EXPLAINED
- Tumbled: softened edges and an aged surface; the most popular pool deck finish.
- Brushed: a gently textured, satin surface with a refined look and good grip.
- Honed (unfilled): a smooth, matte face with travertine's natural holes left open for an authentic, textured look.
- Porcelain outdoor surfaces: textured finishes designed for grip in wet areas.
CHOOSING POOL COPING
Pool coping is the stone edge that frames your pool where the deck meets the water. It is one of the most visible parts of the project, so it is worth choosing carefully.
BULLNOSE VS EASED EDGE
Bullnose coping has a fully rounded front edge for a classic, comfortable look. Eased edge coping has a squared front with softened corners for a cleaner, more modern finish.
3 CM VS 5 CM COPING
5 cm coping is thicker and frames the pool with a stronger, more substantial edge. 3 cm coping is slimmer and sits level with 3 cm pavers for a seamless, flush look.
SIZES AND COLORS
Our coping comes in 12x12, 12x24 and 16x24 pieces in Ivory, Silver, Noce and Walnut travertine, plus Myra limestone and Royal Beige marble, in tumbled, brushed, honed and fine-picked finishes depending on the stone.
MATCH OR CONTRAST?
Matching coping and pavers in the same stone and color creates a calm, unified deck, which is why it is the most popular choice. A contrasting coping, such as Noce coping with Ivory pavers, outlines the pool and adds definition. To finish the look, add pool mosaics at the waterline.
HOW MUCH TO ORDER
- Pavers: measure the deck area in square feet (length × width for each section) and add 10% for cuts and waste.
- Coping: measure the pool perimeter in linear feet. Each 24-inch piece covers 2 linear feet, so divide the perimeter by 2, then add 10–15% for corners, cuts and curves.
- Natural stone lots: Your sample comes from the lot we have in stock now, so it shows that lot's actual color range and finish. Future lots may look lighter, darker, or more veined, so order your full quantity plus 10% at once to keep the whole job from one lot.
- Porcelain: porcelain pavers are consistent from piece to piece, so a sample is about seeing the color and finish in your own backyard light.
CARE AND MAINTENANCE
Travertine and limestone: a penetrating stone sealer helps protect against pool water, chlorine, salt and stains. Reseal periodically and clean with a pH-neutral stone cleaner.
Porcelain: no sealing needed. Rinse or mop with everyday outdoor tile cleaners.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Do travertine pavers stay cool around a pool?
Travertine is known for staying comfortable underfoot. Its porous, textured surface generally stays cooler than concrete, especially in light colors like Ivory, which is a big reason it is a favorite for pool decks in warm climates.
Are porcelain pavers good for pool decks?
Outdoor porcelain pavers are an excellent pool deck choice. They are made with textured surfaces for wet areas, resist frost and stains and never need sealing. Check each product's slip rating to choose the best option for your deck.
Do I need to seal travertine pavers?
Sealing is recommended for travertine and limestone pavers, especially around pools. A penetrating sealer helps protect the stone from pool chemicals, salt and stains while keeping its natural look.
Can I use pavers in a freezing climate?
Porcelain pavers are frost resistant and a great fit for freeze-thaw climates. For natural stone, choose frost-resistant varieties, and contact our specialists before ordering so we can help you pick the right stone for your area.
Should my pool coping match my pavers?
Matching coping and pavers is the most popular choice for a seamless look, and our travertine coping comes in the same colors as our travertine pavers. A contrasting color is a great option if you want to outline the pool.
