Herringbone Mosaics
Herringbone is the most popular mosaic pattern in natural stone — and for good reason. The interlocking V-shape creates dynamic directional movement across any surface, adding visual energy to backsplashes and shower walls that simple geometric patterns cannot match. Available in marble, travertine, limestone, and onyx — in multiple chip sizes and finishes.
Why herringbone works so well
The herringbone pattern creates directional movement that draws the eye across a surface. Installed horizontally on a backsplash, it creates width. Installed vertically on a shower wall, it creates height. The V-angle also means that the natural veining of each marble chip creates a mirror-like pattern at the joins — an effect that is particularly striking in Calacatta and Carrara marble.
Available in natural stone varieties:
Marble
Calacatta, Carrara, Asian Statuary, Thassos, Nero Marquina — the most dramatic herringbone options.
Travertine
Ivory, gold, walnut — warm organic herringbone for bathrooms, backsplashes, and outdoor applications.
Limestone
Cream and gray — the most understated herringbone for calm, restrained interior applications.
Onyx
Honey onyx herringbone — the most dramatic and translucent herringbone mosaic for feature applications.
Available chip sizes:
Mini Herringbone
Small chips (1×2) — intricate, detailed pattern. More complex appearance up close.
Standard Herringbone
Classic chips (1×3, 2×4) — the most popular size. Balanced pattern for backsplashes and shower walls.
Large Herringbone
Larger chips (2×6, 3×6) — bolder, more graphic pattern. Fewer tiles visible per square foot.
Best applications:
Kitchen Backsplash
Shower Feature Walls
Bathroom Walls
Shower Floors
Fireplace Surrounds
Decorative Niches
Herringbone vs chevron: Herringbone uses rectangular chips placed at 90-degree angles to each other — the ends meet at the center of the adjacent chip. Chevron uses parallelogram-shaped chips that meet at a point — creating a sharper, more continuous V. Herringbone is more traditional and forgiving to install. Chevron is more contemporary and requires precise cutting. When in doubt, herringbone is the safer choice for DIY and contractor installations alike.
